Downtown Hammond, IN Master Plan (CNU award)

SOLUTIONS

After decades of economic decline, downtown Hammond was poised for a turnaround as new commuter rail service to Chicago and a surprisingly robust housing market took shape. Working with urban planner Jeff Speck while at Stantec, CommunityScale team members crafted a master plan to retrofit Hammond’s downtown core into a walkable neighborhood. The plan combined public realm interventions, rehabilitation and redevelopment of publicly and privately owned real estate, and a dramatically improved multi-modal mobility network that leveraged future transit service and existing regional connections. The award-winning effort gave the city a clear framework to jump-start downtown revitalization.
